Article updated on 13.12.2023

The movie "Moulin Rouge" (2001) is a revival of the musical genre from Australian theater and film director Baz Luhrmann. The film is very beautiful, it is filled with bright costumes, colors, beautiful voices, and songs. The actors did well with their roles. "Moulin Rouge" will not be to every viewer's taste, sometimes there is too much music. The director previously staged Puccini's opera "La Bohème". In its genre, the film is interesting, charming, a little naive and inspiring.

The plot is very simple. We are told a story about lovers and their crazy actions. The film could be called "Romeo and Juliet in a New World," but Baz Luhrmann's work is quite distinctive. The voice-over reports on an episode of life that happened in Paris in 1899. We then learn that the author is a poet; he is the main character in the film, you can watch on 123movies played by Ewan McGregor. He meets a courtesan and immediately falls in love with her.

The lead female role is played by Nicole Kidman. Christian and Satin fall in love with each other according to the law of the genre. They fill their feelings with songs, dances, and music. The movie has great soundtracks, with cover versions of many hits waiting for us. The lovers immerse themselves in the world of bohemia, become friends with the famous artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and take part in various spectacles.

Nicole Kidman and Evan McGregor brilliantly embodied their characters and performed many musical compositions themselves. "Moulin Rouge" tries to show elements of realism, but Baz Luhrmann has actually created a film that feels more like a theatrical drama. The film doesn't spoil the whole story with a fake happy ending. The courtesan Satine is sick with tuberculosis, the poet Christian is a naive young man "penniless." Of course the ending will be tragic, just like Romeo and Juliet.

Cameraman Donald McAlpin showcases superb shots, and they are aptly complemented by special effects that make "Moulin Rouge" actually beautiful. The metaphorical scene of the dance above the clouds will later be cited in the 2016 film "La La Land." Satine and Christian's story is naive, romantic and tragic. Baz Luhrmann didn't just make a melodrama. The director has created a quality dramatic film production, one of the best, unusual and interesting musicals in cinema.
